This portion of our website is currently under construction.

Additional information on the fees for a Concealed Carry Permit (CCW) application and fingerprints shall be added soon or you can inquire directly by visiting the Costilla County Sheriff's Office. The address and telephone number to contact Costilla County Sheriff's Office can be located here.

In order to be qualified to carry a concealed carry firearm, you will need to show that you have been certified in how to use your weapon(s). Deputy Jonathan Johansen is a Colorado Law Enforcement Training Certified & P.O.S.T. Certified Firearms Instructor as well as a Field Training Officer. Should you need a basic handgun training certificate prior to applying for your CCW, you can email Deputy Johansen for information. The qualification service is offered solely by Deputy Johansen and is not a service offered through the Costilla County Sheriff's Office without approval from Sheriff Gilbert Martinez or UnderSheriff Amos Medina. Upon successful completion of your firearms course, you will receive a certificate of achievement in basic handgun understanding and operation which is required prior to applying for your concealed carry permit.

Should you wish to contact Deputy Johansen for this service, a few items will be needed prior to certification. Upon emailing Deputy Johansen, please include what type of firearm(s) you will be using to qualify. This includes whether your weapon(s) are revolvers or semi-automatics as well as what caliber of ammunition your weapon(s) use. If you use a semi-automatic, a minimum of two magazines will be required although three are recommended. Also required while on the firing range will be a brimmed hat (baseball cap), hearing protection (firearm rated ear plugs or ear muff type protection), and eye protection. For one firearms qualification, a minimum of 40 rounds (bullets) will be required. It is recommended that you have 100 rounds available. A holster for your weapon, and if using a semi-automatic weapon, a holster for your extra magazines, would be of great assistance to you, but are not required. An outdoor firearms range, target stands and targets will be provided. Should you need to borrow a firearm, Deputy Johansen has a small assortment of semi-automatic handguns available to lend you for an additional charge to use while at the firearms range.

A Colorado issued Driver's License or State Identification Card in valid and current standing, or a United States issued Passport will be needed in order to perform a criminal background check for any prior misdemeanor and/or felony criminal activity, probation/parole status (if applicable) and Protection Order status (again, only if applicable). A criminal background check is performed solely to verify that you are legally able to carry a firearm in the State of Colorado and the background check will NOT include minor traffic violations such as speeding citations, nor will it include your employment history or financial/credit related history. A separate background check will be performed by the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, which will be more thorough upon submitting your CCW application through the Costilla County Sheriff's Office.
