* DETENTION & JAIL INFORMATION

Costilla County Sheriff's Office is also known as Costilla County Jail. A County Jail is the initial intake facility for adult persons whom have committed a crime or have recently been arrested by a Law Enforcement Officer whom has probable cause and/or evidence that said person(s) have committed a crime within the County of Costilla. A County Jail is also for persons who have already been convicted of a crime to serve their Court ordered sentences.

Our Jail can detain an inmate convicted and sentenced of a crime for a period of up to two years. If a Court/Judge sentences an inmate to serve time for a sentence longer than two years, the inmate will immediately (or as quickly as reasonably prudent) be transferred to a State or Federally operated correctional institution, sometimes referred to as prison. In the event that a juvenile, a person under the age of eighteen (18) is taken into custody, they can be detained at Costilla County Sheriff's Office for a period not to exceed six (6) hours before being released or transferred to a juvenile detention facility.

Our Jail is maintained and operated ultimately under the care and control of Sheriff Gilbert Martinez. Jail Administrator Elizabeth "Betty" Medina and Detention Sergeant Peter DeHerrera are in the immediate charge, under the Sheriff's authority, to maintain, provide and care for the needs of any inmate who is arrested and/or serving their sentence at our facility. Should you have concerns or questions regarding persons who are in the custody of Costilla County Sheriff's Office & Jail, please address your concerns to Administrator Medina and/or Detention Sergeant DeHerrera. You may contact them using the means listed on our Contact Page. Inmates who are detained and/or arrested are allowed to make a minimum of two telephone calls prior to being placed in the general population areas of our facility. If a busy signal or no answer is reached upon their initial call(s), they may be allowed to make other calls, non-collect, at a later time. Once detained and placed in general population, inmates have the ability to make an unlimited amount of collect calls to any telephone number. Calling cards will not work or function correctly from the general population telephones.
